Preaching to the Choir
When I have something to say sir, I'm going to say it now!
Phil Ochs
Dear friends,
Some of you may have noticed how over the last few months these lists
have grown progressively narrower, though I don't believe shallower.
Every time I send out one of my pieces, there are a couple of people who
ask to be removed from the list (the Iraq porn piece was a front runner
for REMOVE ME!s; sex really hits a nerve..). I always comply, but I
wonder why. Some perhaps simply don't have time, or if they are Virgoans
they may find it untidy in the Inbox; some may have work related
eAddresses and they don't want the boss, who monitors their
communication, to find they are receiving non work related stuff.
I do receive commentary on my writing. It is mostly to the tune of IF
YOU WOULD JUST TONE IT DOWN A BIT YOU WOULD REACH A WIDER AUDIENCE, BE
MORE PERSUASIVE. To those helpful individuals I explain myself thusly: I
yam not trying to "reach" an "audience", and I yam not trying to be
persuasive. These writings are not professional - not for sale to
humans. I yam not an entertainer, so I couldn't give a care about
audience. I yam not telling people how to think, simply suggesting they
do so. I consider that my composition is the best transcription possible
of the messages I receive, and I resend solely for everyone's perusal.
Read what you want, believe what you want.
Some commentary is content related. Everyone has a pet peeve, and when
that button is pushed, it pushes hir over the edge. Maybe I yam
projecting here but it occurs to me there are patterns emerging -
Liberals don't want to hear any critique of alternative organizations,
conservatives don't want to hear anything about the CONspiracy. Jews
don't want to hear about Palestine, and Arabs don't want to hear about
Israel. Prudes and chauvinists don't want to hear about sex. Editors
don't want to hear about censorship. Medical doctors don't want to hear
about natural health. American "patriots" don't want to hear about any
other country besides the Enemy du Jour. Motorheads don't want to hear
about bikes. Gridheads don't want to hear about solar or wind. GMO
"farmers" don't want to hear about organics. Normals don't want to hear
about "BoB".
I yam certain you can add your own favorite group of ignoramuses to this
list. When eventually their sacred cow is criticized they bail because
they don't want to hear it. Evidently only far out progressive
freakazoids are open minded enough to be able to take it all in and make
their own informed decisions about what is correct and what is bullshit,
what is valid and what is useless, what is information and what is
propaganda, what is reality and what is fantasy. Luckily there are still
a lot of us left!
That is fine as far as it goes. A lot of us enjoy knowing there are
other like minded people out here, so we don't feel quite so all alone,
and enjoy receiving news de la weird that others may have garnered from
other sources and shared with us. I do.
Still there is something effete about preaching to the choir. Why remind
people about something they already consider self evident? The real
struggle is to carry the message to those who don't have it yet. Each of
us has a responsibility to present the rest of the information to anyone
who hasn't considered it, even if it may result in an hostile reaction,
even if they don't want to hear it, because they think opposing views
are untrue. Truth lies uniquely in the availability of ALL information,
and any attempt to shut it out or down is an attempt to purvey lies.
Those of you who know me personally are aware I have led a life of
relentless and ongoing struggle against editors of every stripe: from
uptight liberal co-op newsletter collaters, to Trotskiist Green party
eco fascists publishing manifestos, to nice conservative neighbors
editing weekly community papers, to left leaning alternative zine
coordinators, to ultra right wing CIA implant controlled
editor/publishers of the major dailies, to share these thoughts with
you, and everyone. All my life I have been told Not now dear! and other
variations of Shut up! and I have never stood for it, don't intend to
for a moment, and I yam going to do something about it!
The internet is an amazing tool for communication without interference
by editors. Fast, easy, inexpensive, broad based (and getting broader
every moment), the net offers anyone with a computer and modem access to
a virtually unlimited event horizon, which can be interactive in real
time. That is way cool!
However it is not the level playing field some suppose. At least one
report has come in that a piece did not appear on line as posted.
Another report came in that some had not received an eMailing that
others from the same list had. Are there filters installed at the server
level? I have noticed ghost eAddresses (for want of a more technical
term) that even though they have been deleted from the list they keep
appearing, sometimes to the annoyance of the subscriber. Does the net
have a memory? Is it my computer? I can't find those eAddresses in my
window. If this happens to you, bear with me, I don't mean to annoy;
sometimes the net seems to override my commands. I never know just what
is going to happen when I hit SEND, but as long as nothing blows up I
figure it can't be too bad..
About the open lists. Some have suggested using a BCC: format to provide
security. Well, my ancient (14 years old) machine doesn't do that. Some
have asked to receive on an individual basis, and I send those wEirdmail
without their being on a list. If that is what you would prefer, I'll
gladly send to you on a you only basis too. But there is one big
advantage to the open list format, for those who think risk assessment
is a feeling, and that is the ability to respond to any, or all,
yourself without someone like Alicia, or Rasa, or Shlomit acting as a
proctor, deciding who will get what from whom. Often the lists spur
spontaneous discussion and debate as well as criticism. Stimulating!
Now, I greatly appreciate all the wEirdmail I receive from Alicia, and
Rasa, and Shlomit, and I forward what I think is most interesting too,
so I don't mean to blame them. Yet they have been very reluctant to
publish my writing online (though I should add here that to their
credit, Alicia and Shlomit have each published one article I wrote). I
yam sure that they would be happy to add any of you to their lists so
you may receive their eMailings directly. They are also very
interesting, worthy, humorous and thought provoking. Those in the
various Yahoo chat groups of course have no idea how many or who might
be receiving, until someone is motivated to add hir two cents worth.
That can be exciting too! One day I hope to have a fast modern computer
so I can handle images, music and film, but this doesn't pay so I can't
foresee that day. Still this is a far cry from typing my articles on an
IBM electric, cutting, pasting and whiting out by hand, schlepping the
mechanicals down to the print shop and paying plenty for hard copy which
only those I can hand it to physically could see, after which it would
get tossed in the trash (many thanks to you brave souls who have kept
dogeared copies of Food for Birds, People for Profit from the old
days!). These days the trash is a simple click and drag, once the piece
is read, or it can be forwarded or printed out for wider diffusion and
posterity. What will technology bring us next? If we can keep it from
bringing us global annihilation, it should be pretty cool!
Greetings and thanks to all for sharing your tales! Enjoy these messages
of paranoia and joy, outrage and love. There is some REALLY weird stuff
to come!
Love, Yo.
Phil Ochs

What's the use?
That's right! says Ruth Schwartz, Why bother?
I mean it is all such a stinking mess. You have a world where three
billion souls are denied the barest necessitites of life - adequate
food, clean water, a sense of security, while the sons and daughters of
the elite splurge on idle amusements and avoid contact with the vast
ocean of disenfranchised poor kept back from their playgrounds by force.
You have the most momentous decisions concerning the future of
civilization being made by a small coterie of hugely wealthy white men,
sequested in sumptuous splendor, guarded by thousands of heavily armed
troops while millions demonstrate in protest about them. You have the
greatest nation on Earth conquering the tiniest nations, wholly unable
to offer any effective defense against the military juggernaut of the
U.S., as if they weren't already entirely under the sway of U.S.
corporations and the electronic economy, and solely to satisfy the lust
for rapine and plunder on the part of the chiefs of the military
industrial complex. You have a governmental apparatus that is
acknowledged to be founded upon treasonous dishonesty at every level,
corruption and criminality as modus operandi and organized violence as
the sole solution to dissent and unrest that are the inevitable result
of official injustice. You have a media empire that has abjectly
abdicated its duty to keep the public informed for participation in
democratic process, instead whoring itself out to capitalistic
interests, and becoming little more than a public relations office for
government and advertising outlet for business. You have corporations
whose greatest desire is to foment wars in desert regions in order to
build pipelines from Central Asia to the Far East, not to satisfy
America's gluttonous appetite for fossil fuels, but to open new markets
in the fast growing countries of Asia, to exploit both Near Easterners
and Far Easterners for more profits for Westerners. You have
environmental crises around the globe that are becoming permanent, well
beyond the ability of either science or the economy to reverse. You have
toxic new high yield munitions spreading death by poisoning in the newly
liberated zones, where sudden illness is expected and babies are born
looking hardly human only weeks after the president announces the end of
hostilities. You have a chief executive who is openly declaring
unilateral war against anyone he doesn't like, either at home or abroad,
though his track record on service, competance, and criminality is
spotty, and gleefully handing over the spoils to his family and their
cronies. You have a federal government of smirking thugs whose
connections with corporations and the ruling aristocracy make them
positively unsuitable for positions of authority over a democratic
system. You have a right wing of complacent but ignorant "patriots"
whose My country right or wrong! attitude allows the worst excesses of
tyranny to abridge and annul the rights and protections held so dear by
American conservatives. You have a liberal establishment of cosseted
armchair progressives who deem it effective enough to donate to worthy
causes, after paying taxes to support the war machine, while not
alienating the electorate by rocking the status quo. You have a left
wing of "radicals" whose most radical act is browbeating their comrades
over picayune points of political propriety, while shaving and dressing
up to emulate their CONspiracy counterparts for "credibility". People
everywhere are so obsessed with their patrist program of the pursuit of
power they can't even begin to break out of this endless negative spiral
of retributive warfare. It's only going to get worst. We're fucked.
Unless.
Unless we can come up with a new idea. An idea that it is okay not to do
something. It is okay not to light that fire, start that car, go to that
job, pick up that rock or fire that gun. There really isn't any rush!
It's all happening! Just because people are going crazy is no reason to
go crazy. It's like shouting Fire! in a crowded theatre, only it's
shouting WAR! in a crowded world. Who will be the first to sit down?
Could it be the conservatives as they realize supporting fascists will
destroy the republic that protects their freedom? Could it be the
liberals when they recognize their comforts depend upon hegemony over
natural resources that only war can bring? Will it be the leftists
accepting that their role is to provide a true alternative of acceptance
and tolerance, as well as a revocation of profit motivation and power
brokerage? Will it be left up to the half of the human population who
have had no chance to be heard, and have no place to sit?
The United States, and the First World in general, occupy the sole
position from which a change in patterns of exploitation and betrayal
may come. Unless the priviledged societies demonstrate that their
militaristic oppression can be changed into co-operative support and
sharing for the struggling masses and experimental republics of the
Third World, there will be no incentive for terrorists, whether official
or opportunistic, to stay their hands from brutal deeds intended only to
deepen the chaos. An effective program to relieve the wants of the
world must include abolishment of immigration quotas, trade barriers and
sanctions, protection of the environment as a priority over profit, an
end to militarism and recourse to violence as domestic and foreign
policy, extension of basic human rights to every person regardless of
race, creed or country of origin, an economic system that values labor
and caps executive compensation, a return to ethical governance of
honest representation and elimination of conflicts of interest, and
adherence by government both to international law and recognized
standards of political and fiscal morality.
The root of society is the heart of each citizen, and it is the duty of
each citizen, right or left, rich or poor to keep to the new idea that
there is no "THEY" only a broad and profound global "WE". If we can do
this well hurting ourselves, imagine together how well we could do
helping one another! That means discarding patrist structuring and
readopting matrism, whereby society gives life rather than delivers
death. The possibilities are endless! If we can learn, and teach to
build instead of break, to give instead of take, to share instead of
scare, then we shall truly be one family, and live in harmony and peace.

Three Points For America
No president No criminal government No war
No president - Whereas the men in office have subverted the Constitution
of the United States by invoking executive priviledge to nullify the
checks and balances of multicameral government, and usurped the
authority of the people as vested in their representatives, and
defrauded the American public and the world by tampering with the
electoral process; Whereas the men in office have traduced the dignity
of the White House by exploiting the institution as a staging platform
for covert and illegal activities, a sinecure and refuge for family
members, cronies and other off duty operatives, and a fund raising
tourist attraction for lobbyists; Whereas the men in office have stained
the Oval Office carpet with impudent, imprudent, impure behavior;
whereas has come to mean an absolute tyrant in the worlds
first modern democracy. Heedless of any need to curb violent,
intemperate, traitorous urges, todays president sets the agenda and
orders the bodies buried. The office of president has been utterly
invalidated by illegal and immoral acts perpetrated in the highest seat
of government.
No criminal government - Whereas government finds it necessary to commit
crimes to carry out the business of state, including but not limited to
environmental destruction, genocide, assassination, terror, larceny on a
scale for which no adequate term exists, corruption, collusion and
collaboration with criminals in business and military, fraud, fibs and
filthy lies of every type directed against the people of the world to
further the geopolitical designs of administraitors, every category and
degree of violation and misdemeanor perpetrated by its agents to further
their employers or their own agendae; that the primary purpose of
government is to enforce the law, and any government that either fails
to enforce the law or breaks it by committing illegal acts is a criminal
government and as such has no authority to govern nor its agents to
prosecute the people. Criminal government must be dismantled,
dismembered and discredited immediately and forever, and replaced by
transparent, equitable and just bureaucratic apparatus. Government
agents who violate law must be forever disarmed, disbarred, and
disenfranchised.
No war - Whereas state war has forever been the prerogative of princes,
the greatest of all sports, the ultimate political whorehouse; Whereas
strategic war has robbed the Earth of generations of beings, destroyed
ecosystems in every part of the world, and hardened billions of humans
against compassion towards one another; Whereas tactical war in a
hundred localities continues to prevent meaningful progress in the
fratricidal peace process; Whereas war on terror has achieved none of
its stated goals, but has achieved the predicted effect of raising the
terror standard to new depths of depravity; Whereas war on drugs has
killed more than drug use has killed, is a madcap profiteering scheme
operated jointly by organized crime and criminal government, and a
monstrous Machiavelesque machination to dissipate basic human rights and
reduce the worlds population to a condition of stoned out slavery; That
war in any and all its forms be immediately and forever abolished from
the lexicon of civilized activities, That any suggestion of warlike
official acts result in immediate dismissal and banishment. Brutes make
war and war makes brutes.
It is far too late to be coy about speaking these truths, fearing the
breathless consequences of too much candor in an atmosphere of too much
rancor. Anyone who isnt even more fearful about the program that is
playing hasnt been looking through the portholes.
For a future we must end the tyranny of brutality.
No president - Whereas the men in office have subverted the Constitution

terror standard to new depths of depravity; Whereas war on drugs has
killed more than drug use has killed, is a madcap profiteering scheme
operated jointly by organized crime and criminal government, and a
monstrous Machiavelesque machination to dissipate basic human rights and
reduce the worlds population to a condition of stoned out slavery; That
war in any and all its forms be immediately and forever abolished from
the lexicon of civilized activities, That any suggestion of warlike
official acts result in immediate dismissal and banishment. Brutes make
war and war makes brutes.
It is far too late to be coy about speaking these truths, fearing the
breathless consequences of too much candor in an atmosphere of too much
rancor. Anyone who isnt even more fearful about the program that is
playing hasnt been looking through the portholes.
For a future we must end the tyranny of brutality.
Three Point Program for a Future
Environmental protection, Social justice, Economic democracy
Environmental protection - Whereas all culture and civilization is a
manifestation of life as evolved on this planet Earth, that civilization
owes a debt of cognizance to life. Specifically that all life forms be
respected no matter how tiny or numerous. That large, heterogenous
tracts of the Earths surface be retained in a natural state as
reservoirs of genetic and ecosystemic diversity. That Earths oceans be
preserved in a clean and natural state as the font of all life, and the
source of oxygen for all respiring creatures. That Earths atmosphere be
preserved as a protective shield between the biomass and the destructive
power of the unfiltered radiation of empty space. That Earths forests
be preserved and managed as a biological capacitor for weather,
evolution, and renewable resouces. That culture devise methodology to
enhance rather than destroy natural systems of energy transfer within
the biomass.
Social justice - Whereas all persons are created equal and are endowed
by creation of certain inalienable rights including the right to life,
the right to self determination, the right to individual innocence, that
no individual, corporation, state, nation or international combine may
abridge or annul these rights. Specifically that the law of the jungle
whereby the powerful devour the innocent be forever and forthwith
terminated in society and be replaced by the rule of reason and
consensual law. That murder in any form be abolished as public policy
including but not limited to warfare, genocide, extermination, execution
and euthanasia. That any form of culpability by ancestry or association
be deemed void and illicit including discrimination on the basis of
race, ethnicity, color, language, geographical origin or residence,
gender, age, spiritual or political beliefs or affiliation; that any
individual be held culpable solely on the basis of hir conscious and
consenting deeds as a competant adult. Whereas institutional
traumatization of individuals results in emotional armoring against
compassion, thereby guaranteeing a continuing cycle of violence
throughout the generations, that all forms of social violence be deemed
illicit including genital mutilation and child abuse, spousal abuse and
honor killing, and repression of physical, sexual, psychological and
political diversity.
Economic democracy - Whereas each individual has the right to enjoy and
benefit from the fruits of hir own creativity and labor, that no
individual, corporation, state, nation or international combine may
abridge or annul this right or usurp the fruits thereof. Specifically
that economies of scale whereby corporations or syndicates of
corporations pay pennies to the pound whilst individuals pay for product
plus profit be abolished and abandonned. That each and every customer
bear full costs for all services contracted for and delivered to such
customer by any individual, corporation or governmental body including
long term environmental and social costs. That business, utilities and
taxation be billed at a flat rate and that inequitable rate structures
intended to redistribute wealth be abolished and abandonned. That
minimum wage be abolished and a maximum wage be instituted, and that
every worker be free to contract individually for the sale or transfer
of hir creativity and labors. That export from any country or region of
raw materials be forbidden, that local populations may benefit from the
development of value added to local resources. That free access to
information and free trade of goods and services be guaranteed to every
individual, and be neither reserved to nor preempted by any individual,
corporation or governmental body.
The United States of America, all its agents and citizens, have a duty
of world leadership to institute this three point program unilaterally
and immediately to end the tyranny of brutality.

The Sacred Cow
Some things are so important that they by their very ponderance preclude
any discussion or analysis. We call such subjects Sacred Cows, after the
Hindu practice of placing the cow above any kind of restraint or
regulation. Hindus consider the cow sacred because cows produce milk
from which a culture well habituated to starvation derives sustenance -
the cow that gives the golden milk so to speak. Most cultures have some
sort of sacred cow or another: individuals, objects, places, practices,
concepts that are above reproach. In the United States the sacred cow is
war.
"It is interesting that no one ever got arrested for shouting War! but
people do get arrested for saying Peace!"
Pat Morse, New Hampshire peace activist currently facing charges for
protesting war.
War, not baseball is America's favorite passtime. War is its own excuse.
Any practice, any technology that may be applied to waging war is exempt
from regulation, no matter how expensive, cruel, wasteful or destructive
to populations, installations, or ecosystems. After the horrors of the
Great War, thought at the time to be the War to End All Wars, the
world's governments gathered at Geneva to institute protocols for
warfare that were intended to limit the worst excesses of war's effects.
Those protocols were founded upon the prohibition of weaponry that would
cause "unnecessary" suffering to either militaries or civilians, the
idea being that legitimate means of waging war were to be limited to
only enough destructive force to compel an adversary to submit, and no
more. Gasses, poisons, munitions that cause excessive maiming and in
general weapons of mass destruction are illegal under the terms of the
Geneva Convention of 1925, as well as enslavement of civilian
populations and ill treatment of combattant prisoners. The Convention
was seen as necessary because all sides in the Great War employed
whatever newly developed technologies that might be deciding factors for
the victors. Like any law, it was invented to prohibit actions that
people were taking. Or, said another way, there would be no use
outlawing something that wasn't being done.
But war is a political whorehouse. War resets standards of behavior, as
atrocity begets atrocity in an ever escalating negative spiral of
outrage and retribution. Like the Hatfields and the McCoys, the origins
of animosity become shrouded in the mists of time, while victims of the
most recent affront scream Vengeance! The United States, despite the
pious posturing of its thief executive and his fanatical fundamentalist
supporters, refuses categorically to emulate their godhead by turning
the other cheek, instead taking a head for an eye in its lust for
revenge against perceived enemies. The need to project an overwhelmingly
violent response to any challenge to U.S. hegemony has elevated warfare
to the status of sacred cow. Nothing is more important than teaching
those British, French, Apaches, Comanches, Arapahoes, Cheyenne,
Seminoles, Algonquins, Navahos, Cherokees, Crees, Micmacs, Penobscots,
Sioux, Iroquois, Hopis, Algerians, Moroccans, Tunisians, Mexicans,
Carolinians, Georgians, Tennesseeans, Mississippians, Alabamians,
Texans, Virginians, Kentuckians, Spaniards, Filipinos, Germans,
Austrians, Hungarians, Russians, Italians, Japanese, Vietnamese,
Koreans, Cambodians, Laoatians, Nicaraguans, Costa Ricans, Guatemalans,
Colombians, Hondurans, Haitians, Cubans, Chinese, Serbians, Bosnians,
Iranians, Iraqis, Palestinians, Libyans, Somalis, Afghanis, Grenadans,
Panamanians (not a compleat list) a lesson about the United States's
readiness to impose its will by application of exceptional violence that
they will never forget. Apparently they never have, and presumably they
never will.
War is not an instrument of policy, but the aim of policy. Repeated
fabrication of pretext for warfare has kept the U.S. embroiled in
ceaseless war on dozens of fronts since the inception of its republic,
dedicated to liberty and justice for all. The first Roosevelt enjoyed
the Splendid Little War of aggression against Spain and its
"possessions" after lamenting that he would welcome a war, any war to
enliven his otherwise humdrum existence in the White House. Roosevelt
the Second provoked and collaborated with the Japanese to drag the
United States into World War II (what a great idea to number them!) in
order to extend his rule and create the puissant military industrial
complex that Eisenhower solidified, then warned against. Those
presidents have not been criticized for the mass murders they
perpetrated. Lyndon Johnson orchestrated the Tonkin incident which
opened the door for massive U.S. involvement in Viet Nam, and he was
loudly denounced for picking up his dog by the ears. Richard Nixon
deceived the American public and circumvented Congress's authority by
waging a secret air war against Cambodia and Laos, and he was driven to
resign from the White House for operating a burglary from the Oval Room.
Bill Clinton ordered bombing of desperate civilians in Bosnia, and was
nearly hounded from office for cigar abuse. George W. Bush facilitated
mass murder of Americans in New York in order to facilitate his ambition
to visit mass murder upon the impoverished citizens of Afghanistan and
Iraq, and he has been ineffectually criticized for having purveyed
untruths about his administration's rationale for war in those third
world countries.
Murder is a crime of the highest order, deserving on occasion (or in
Texas) the supreme punishment. However when murder is committed on a
vast scale by surrogates in uniform, the officials who arm and order
militaries to kill and die are pardonned for their heinous acts, granted
hero status and given comfortable pensions and honorable mentions in
subsequent histories. Such is America's passionate obsession with war.
Rather than being ashamed of their government's amoral actions,
Americans are proud of the mayhem they promulgate, waving flags, tying
yellow ribbons and braying with evident satisfaction about Kicking ass!
as long as their own sons and loved ones are spared the inconvenience of
extended tours of duty in uncomfortable theatres, and they themselves
are spared being confronted with images of the results of their sons and
daughters lawless behavior in far away lands.
And lawless it is. The United States has been in the forefront of
violations of the Geneva Convention since ratifying it three quarters of
a century ago. It made sense when there was a chance U.S. citizens would
be attacked with weapons of mass destruction, but when faced with a
hostile world grown resentful of the larcenies and murders committed by
the U.S., the Washington government has deemed it expedient to abrogate
the Convention's restraints by deploying weapons that maim, poison, kill
indiscriminately or destroy entire ecosystems. From flamethrowers to the
tumbling bullets of the M-16, from ensonification of the oceans to
nuclear bombs, no weapon system is too fearful or dastardly to not be
included in the available arsenal of this peace and freedom loving
nation. And they know it only too well. The Bush administration's firm
insistence that Americans be exempted by member nations from prosecution
by the International War Crimes Tribunal (under pain of curtailment of
aid and probable invasion) is proof positive of their acknowledgement of
guilt.
The most recent and egregious violation of the terms of the Geneva
Convention by the U.S. is the use of depleted uranium penetrating
munitions, seen by military planners as a necessity to afford U.S.
forces a tactical advantage over declared enemies who might presume to
defend themselves by the use of armored vehicles and installations. DU
is ten times more dense than lead, and combusts as it penetrates,
turning armored weapons into incinerators for their occupants. More
significantly, DU becomes pulverized on impact into a fine powder that
is carried on the wind, mixes with soil and water, becoming inextricably
blended with the ecosystem. An alpha emitter, DU's half life of 4.5
billion years (the approximate age of Earth) guarantees that it will
become and remain a characteristic of any landscape in which it is used.
Since hundreds of tons of DU were expended in Gulf War I, cancers, birth
defects and deaths in Iraq have multipied. Iraqi mothers no longer ask
if a child is a girl or boy, but if it is normal. The level of suffering
caused by the weapon is impossible to overestimate. The use of hundreds
more tons of DU in Gulf War II is compounding the environmental
catastrophe and the toll of human suffering in the newly conquered
territories. In addition, thousands of U.S. troops are exibiting
symptoms of a so-called "mystery illness", as the Pentagon terms
radiation sickness, and have been quarantined on bases in Germany to
keep them away from the press and public awareness. Despite its claims
there is no evidence that exposure to DU is hazardous to friendly forces
and enemies alike, the Pentagon is well aware of the dangers posed by
its use.
"Aerosol DU (Depleted Uranium) exposures to soldiers on the battlefield
could be significant with potential radiological and toxicological
effects. [...] Under combat conditions, the most exposed individuals are
probably ground troops that re-enter a battlefield following the
exchange of armour-piercing munitions. [...] We are simply highlighting
the potential for levels of DU exposure to military personnel during
combat that would be unacceptable during peacetime operations. [...DU
is..]... a low level alpha radiation emitter which is linked to cancer
when exposures are internal, [and] chemical toxicity causing kidney
damage. [...] Short term effects of high doses can result in death,
while long term effects of low doses have been linked to cancer. [...]
Our conclusion regarding the health and environmental acceptability of
DU penetrators assume both controlled use and the presence of excellent
health physics management practices. Combat conditions will lead to the
uncontrolled release of DU. [...] The conditions of the battlefield, and
the long term health risks to natives and combat veterans may become
issues in the acceptability of the continued use of DU kinetic
penetrators for military applications."
-- Excerpts from the July 1990 Science and Applications International
Corporation report: ' Kinetic Energy Penetrator Environment and Health
Considerations', as included in Appenix D - US Army Armaments, Munitions
and Chemical Command report: 'Kinetic Energy Penetrator Long Term
Strategy Study, July 1990' These documents state clearly and equivocally
that the US army was well aware of the radioactive and toxic dangers of
Depleted Uranium ammunition long before the first shots of the war were
fired. [end of quoted material]
The Pentagon's bland public assertions of DU's safety are simply
deliberate lies intended to placate a world fed up with the carnage. Use
of depleted uranium in effect constitutes nuclear war. It becomes
apparent that the actual intent of using DU munitions is to permanently
pollute lands containing mineral wealth coveted by U.S. owned
corporations so that only properly equipped personel can survive in
those areas to exploit that wealth. Institutionalized dishonesty and
genocidal brutality are the chief exports of the U.S. in the new
millenium, which program has divested the U.S. of any international
credibility and mortgaged irredeemably the future for Americans and
everyone, every life form, everywhere on our tiny, fragile planet.

Say What?
Ari Fleischer has told Americans they better watch what they say. As
ominous a portent as this may be, coming from the White House, for the
freedoms Americans hold dear, it really is good advice when looked at in
a broader perspective.
What happens in the political world other than assassinations and
mechanized mass murder is words. Just words. The nutzo fascist right, as
incoherent as their dicta may seem when evading pointed questions or
rationalizing their insane deeds, actually have taken word management to
an extreme degree of sophistication. Realizing the average American only
has enough attention span for a bumper sticker, their agitprop phrases
are couched very effectively in that format. One of the best is Just Say
No! Another potent one is God Bless America! Buy War Bonds! Loose Lips
Sink Ships! Support The Troops! United We Stand! the list goes on. Even
less complex than haiku, they have a punchy rhythm, they deliver their
message efficiently, and they evoke visceral response in the teeming
masses that have been preconditioned to certain key words.
The challenge that presents to the loyal opposition is they are very
hard to deconstruct even with lengthy prosaic dialectic, however well
reasoned. And their converse is never as effective, obviously playing a
losing game of catch up. Just Say Yes! simply doesn't grab people the
way Just Say No! does, eventhough it might make a lot more sense in the
context of political progress. Progress is not what they are after. The
bumpersticker sloganizing of the idiot right is so effective in fact,
that even progressives, alternatives and radicals feel compelled to
parrot them back, as if chanting the catechisms of the CONspiracy will
somehow shield them from retribution as antis.
We Support The Troops, Bring Them Home! makes literal sense, but by
reiterating the rightist dogma, the very protest supports the dogs of
war too. It is self evident that we support the troops; that is where
all our tax money goes. we couldn't NOT support the troops if we wanted
to, so why state the obvious?
Saddam Is A Vicious Tyrant. Once again, true enough in a geopolitical
sense, but why give the fascists the airtime? You can look around your
own neighborhood for tyrants and find them under every rock. Not all
that rare! Tyrant is an archetype in human culture. Some have even
proposed that tyrant is a genome of human DNA. Not us, but among us.
Maybe we can eliminate them by carpet bombing the neighborhood, but
typically they escape with the cash moments before the bunker buster
hits, and the only casualties are collateral. Saddam is probly sipping
iced tea in an air conditioned penthouse in Miami right now, laughing at
how he and Osama and their CIA handlers have pulled another wooly one
over the eyes of the working, paying, suffering multidudes of the world.
We Toppled A Dictatorship. Toppling a dictatorship isn't that hard, in
fact they topple of their own weight all the time, eventually. And if
that were really the agenda proffered by the rightists, there wouldn't
be dictatorships in a hundred countries in America, Africa, Europe and
Asia. THOSE dictatorships are "friendly" regimes. That doesn't mean they
are nice to people; No! Far from it. What that means is that they obey
memoranda from the U.S. Department of State. In other words they are
friendly to the interests of the military industrial corporate new world
order, even while they murder their citizens by the thousands or
hundreds of thousands, clear cut the last remnants of the world's
tropical rain forests, or beggar their economies with purchases of
weapons while billions starve in terror. Besides, countries the U.S. has
liberated tend to fall immediately under the sway of new dictatorships
of warlords, drug cartels or the chaos of desperate mobs released from
totalitarian restraint, gleaning the ravaged landscape of demolished
infrastructure for subsistence. Afganis and Iraqis, as oppressed as they
were in 2000, are far worse off today than before being "liberated" by
Anglo American militaries.
We Won. That is a good one. If Saddam or Osama can't be located, if
there are no weapons of mass destruction, if there is no improvement in
the lives of the denizens of lands the U.S. has bulldozed, if there is
no mitigation of the threat of terrorist attacks against Americans, at
least, in the sense of utterly overwhelming by sheer weight of metal a
supine, backward, fourth rate country that had been inspected for
weapons and come up empty, yes we won. As if winning were the reason to
go to war in the first place. Well, it is! After the horrors, and
humiliations of the "loss" of Vietnam (a country we never "had"), the
U.S. military establishment regrouped and formulated a policy of
demonstrating U.S. power by waging winnable wars against much weaker
enemies to minimize committments of time, limit expenditures, reduce
casualties, at least among U.S. personel, but particularly to forestall
the revulsion of feeling in the American public, and consequent momentum
of the peace movement. Eventhough the Baby George administration has
promised a future policy of endless warfare, eternal conflict has been
and will be compartmentalized as neat, affordable, low risk, "winnable"
multiplex war each showing of which will be over before you know it,
undermining any effective protest. But by the time protesters have
kicked off their shoes and cracked a beer after a long, fruitless day at
the barricades, the troops are already being boarded on flights to the
next mini war theatre half a world away from, or right next door to the
last. So, we win the war? So what? We always lose the peace.
It seems so frustrating, that nothing can be done to stop the all
consuming juggernaut of global war while bridges and schools crumble
everywhere from lack of funding, and the Bill of Rights is balled up
like old chewing gum wrapper and tossed in the trash can of history.
There are plenty things that can be done, but one of the first things
that can be done by the billions of people worldwide who do not want,
need or abide war is to stop mouthing the moronic words of the vampire
warmongering elite. You never hear Cheney or Rumsfeld say Peace is cool,
but we just don't think that open negotiations and the rule of
international law is the way to go about it. No! So why should peaceniks
repeat their stupid sayings? The only people who support war are either
stockholders of Halliburton, GE, Bechtel, or utterly duped by the
potent, if simplistic slogans of the warniks. New slogans are needed to
seduce couch potatoes away from mindlessly applauding the mayhem. Here
are few examples:
Lay Off the Troops: No War Today!
Saddam Was "Elected" Too!
We Lost The War - For Respect!
9/11 - The Hoax
U.S. Out Of North America!
Say No To Wargasm!
War On Terror: Tyrants 1; People 0
Divided We Stand - For Peace!
Balm Iraq!
Wake Up And Smell The New World Odor!
I Sleep With Peaceniks!
A Minute Without War; The Way Life Should Be!
Toppling Dictatorship Begins At Home!
Warniks, Take A Ba'ath!
God Bless U.S.! For We Have Sinned!

ominous a portent as this may be, coming from the White House, for the
freedoms Americans hold dear, it really is good advice when looked at in
a broader perspective.

Election defection
The point of political office is to reward your friends and punish your
enemies.
- Richard Nixon
What is all this nonsense about voting to effect change? Does anyone
still believe in that these days? All these foolish candidates vying for
the prize, but being careful not to appear "soft" on any of the sacred
cows that stampede through the halls of government, adding incrementally
to the bullshit that abounds. Except Dennis Kucinich that is. He is a
unique candidate who isn't afraid to say what a majority of Americans
want to hear. Too bad they won't hear it though because the media avoid
him. Besides, he doesn't have a chance, so why doesn't he stay home? And
even if he did somehow secure the Democratic primary by appealing to
Americans' sense of justice (a lot shot, admittedly), he'd probly have a
plane crash on the way to New Hampshire anyway. So why even consider
him? It makes more sense to vote for someone who at least might win,
even if only a clone of CONspiracy lackeys, wrapped in a populist mantle
for the nonce.
And how about media consolidation? Does anyone think it correct that
such a momentous decision as the recent move by the FCC to relax
restrictions on media ownership be made by a 3 - 2 vote of five
unelected officials, the chairman of whom is the son of the secretary of
state? Oh! He's not a friend getting rewarded, he's FAMILY! Well,
there's a chance Congress will overturn it.. after all, they are the
watchdogs of America's freedoms, reknowned for holding the line against
encroaching tyranny.
The populace holds its breath every time a crucial vote comes to the
fore, be it summary war powers, genetically modified foods, minimum
wage, tax breaks for the superrich, drilling in fragile ecosystems, or
extending the federal debt ceiling, and each time the populace heaves a
collective sigh of disappointment that it lost fair and square. Better
luck next time! Maybe more organization will see it passed in a couple
more years. Such good sports Americans are! They vote for the candidate
most likely to win, the politicians vote for the legislation most likely
to win, and as a result the CONspiracy is most likely to win. The people
cast their votes all right, they cast them away voting for prepared
agendae of irrelevant dichotomies in pointless plebiscites, then go back
to their lives of quiet desperation, thinking that at least they voted.
Has anyone ever participated in an election in school or camp or church?
Remember how easily the most popular person won, regardless of ability
or platform? Is it anything but credulous to suppose that national
elections are any different? And even if more people DO want a
particular candidate, there is always the police to keep undesirables
from the polls, rigged voting machines and corrupt election officials
and the supreme court to make certain the CONspiracy stooge comes out on
top.
Time was the United States used to send election monitors out into the
Third World to supervise elections in those countries, make sure they
were open and fair, and that "friendly" candidates were elected.
Nowadays the U.S. needs election monitors from Sri Lanka, Congo and
Haiti to come to Florida to prevent eligible voters from being detained
and dimpled chads from hanging up due process and participatory
democracy.
Is there any way out? As more people realize that electoral politics is
a sham, more stay home on tuesday. Any vote cast is simply a vote of
confidence in the authorities that talley the votes, and who are they?
Still, if everyone who felt that way got out there and voted, it would
be a landslide! Or would it? Maybe it doesn't matter at all who votes
for what - all policy decisions are made in secret, in advance, in
accordance with the CONspiracy's plan to turn everyone into a mercenary
and Earth into a cemetary. But what if it went the other way? What if
everyone refused to vote, and candidates had to make do with the handful
of votes cast by family members and employees? Prezident Boy George,
reelected by an overwhelming 100% of all 123 votes cast nationwide. Talk
about a mandate!
If voting could change anything voting would be illegal. Is that only
cynical? Election results in hand, officials smugly declare the vote
over, and tell everyone to go back to their TVs until next November. It
is said if you vote for the loser you threw your vote away. Don't throw
your vote away! Vote for yourself! You are the basic unit of democracy,
empower yourself to seize the reins of authority and cry Whoa! to all
the madness, waste and bloodshed. If Americans were truly interested in
government of, by and for the people, they would party on tuesday and
stage a mass protest at the capitol on wednesday, challenging the
preselected incumbents to represent them honestly, demanding
accountability, demanding reason, demanding justice! That would be a
vote that counted!

Did You Get This?
Did you get this too?
Today I received a half dozen eMails urging me to purchase "actual rape
footage smuggled out of Iraq". The images showed unhappy looking olive
skinned women with dark hair being coerced into unchaste postures by
unidentifiable grimy white men clad in camo battle dress in an arid
outdoor setting. I am not one to be offended by graphic depictions of
sexual behavior, but these scenes gave rise to some very disturbing
thoughts about supporting troops, freedom and justice.
Maybe it was imaging. So much "actual" war footage these days is
actually virtual footage created in graphic programs, Wag The Dog style.
Or maybe it was actors and non Islamic Muslim-American women who are
well paid sex workers on a desert set somewhere near Hollywood. In which
case it may be "just" porn, albeit portraying sick violent acts to
pander to the prurient pleasures of perverts. In grossly bad taste, but
still legal in a "free" patrist America.
But could it be just what it purports? Could noble U.S. servicemen
commit such depraved crimes against helpless conquered non combattants?
And film the fun with modern mini cams? And smuggle it out to the world
for profit?
Impossible!
Or is it?
Historically, rapine and plunder have long been acknowledged as
inevitable perquisites for poorly paid soldiers on arduous campaigns.
The Trojans did it to the Sabines. The Israelites did it to the
Canaanites (check your bible!). The Romans did it to the Israelites. The
Vandals did it to the Romans. The Crusaders did it to the Palestinians.
The Turks did it to the Palestinians. The British did it to the
Palestinians. The Israelis did it to the Palestinians. The Spanish did
it to the Caribs, the Mayans, the Aztecs, the Incas, the Dutch. The
Dutch did it to the Indonesians. The Indonesians did it to the Timorese.
The Germans did it to the Russians. The Russians did it to the Germans.
The Americans did it to the Native Americans, Mexicans, Moros, Germans,
Nicaraguans, Guatemalans, Salvadoreans, Haitians, Cubans, Japanese,
Koreans, Chinese, Vietnamese.
So maybe it is naive and prudish to be shocked at the thought that
modern U.S. troops took advantage of the situation in Iraq by indulging
in some typical boys-will-play action at the front.
Nevertheless, rape is a crime. Rape by soldiers of conquered civilians
is a war crime. War crimes are terrorism. While patriotic U.S. citizens
tie yellow ribbons to trees, and almost any immobile object, to support
the troops, and Mr. Bush opines that a victory parade must be made to
appear as a celebration of the toppling of a dictatorship, any delight
that either perverts or soldiers may take from virtual or actual war
crimes is the worst sort of example to offer the world, and particularly
those who have suffered tragic consequences from the United States'
insatiable drive to install freedom and democracy by force in oil rich
lands.

9/11 lies
Lies and lies.
Orwellian slip
On May 1 when the president select elected to be the first incumbent president to employ military uniform for his own personal agrandizement by having himself garbed in an amply fashioned flight suit and flown by Naval jet onto the Abraham Lincoln, hastily about-turned to avoid the nearby background of the San Diego coast for the photo op, he announced smugly to the world that Combat operations in Iraq are over. His words were posted on a government web page for people everywhere to take comfort in his brave if bellicose program. Subsequently, as casualties in post combat Iraq exceeded those of combat Iraq, those words sounded like a taunt. One bright morning one bright moron adulterated the text on the website to more closely resemble the new reality as the quote was amended to MAJOR combat operations are over. The Portland Press Herald blithely played along in the September 6 edition by reporting bare facedly that on May 1 the pretzel said MAJOR combat operations are over.
War is Peace!
Obvious nonsense
Watch conspirators when they use the word as they spin their lies. Obviously does nothing to enhance the cogency of any statement, but it does have the subtle undertow that if the listener is not in agreement with the falsehood, then the listener is ignorant or oblivious or a traitorous peacenik terrorist. Obviously is said with a sneer to all those who succomb to its seduction of normality, rightness, sanity. Lies HAVE to be obvious; that's the best way to hide them! And if you go poking around for the truth it is obvious what will happen..
Don't be negative
In general when conspirators speak in public they mean the opposite of what they say. When what they are saying doesn't make sense, try making everything the negative as you translate, suddenly the picture becomes clear.
9/11 exercise:
Arab terrorists flew planes into the buildings = Arab terrorists didn't fly planes into the buildings
Osama bin Laden masterminded the plot = Osama bin Laden didn't mastermind the plot
Collisions caused the buildings to collapse = collisions didn't cause the buildings to collapse
9/11 was a failure of the intelligence establishment = 9/11 was a success for the intelligence establishment
We have positive proof = we have no proof whatever
This isn't a war against Islam = this is war against Islam
This is a war against terror = this is war for terror
Surgical strikes = massive indiscriminate destruction
Freedom and democracy = repression and tyranny
The fact of the matter is there is no fact in this matter. All the information the public has been fed about 9/11 is false, and THAT is the true reason they cannot show evidence to substantiate their claims, and also why there has been and will be no serious inquiry into what really happened.
Meanwhile, keep chanting the official litany, and they let you live a little longer.
